AIGA ATL Workshop: Foundations of Typeface Design – The Noordzij Stroke Model

Gerrit Noordzji identified the stroke of the pen as the central idea in the making of letterforms. His model is influential in type design education around the world. Graphic designers, illustrators, and typeface designers have found the Noordzij model beneficial in producing better letterforms in less time.

In this 3-hour online workshop, you will learn the Noordzij model of the stroke. In a series of lectures and exercises, you will learn the foundation skills to adjust existing typefaces and create your own lettering or fonts for your particular needs. After an initial historical overview of the Noordzij model, you will practice using the font editor Glyphs to design fonts that apply the Noordzij stroke model to common graphic design problems – exercises will be provided to you at the workshop.

Thomas Jockin is a practicing type-designer and educator. His past clients were Google, Express, Foot Locker and Michael Kors. You can find his fonts on Google fonts, Adobe fonts and other distributors.
