The Atlanta Type Walk weaves the story that letters in the downtown built environment tell. Coupled with historic research on letterforms, typefaces and Atlanta's development, the walk travels in time from 1897 to present. Participants see, hear and experience downtown Atlanta from a fresh perspective as they view building names, street signs, wayfinding signs, plaques, abandoned signs and graffiti.
Please arrive 15 minutes prior to 7 PM (Thursday) and 10 AM (Sunday). The walk starts promptly on the hour. Wear comfortable shoes. MARTA cards will be provided.

Schedule

Participants will gather in the lobby of the Loews Hotel (6:45 PM on Thursday, 8/22, 9:45 AM on Sunday, 8/25).

After a short intro in the lobby, we will cross the street and start at the new Atlanta Federal Reserve Building.

From there we will board MARTA at the Midtown Station (on the backside of the Federal Reserve) and go 4 stops south to the Five Points Station.

From there the walk winds through the Fairlie-Poplar historic district then up Peachtree to "uptown" downtown—approximately 1.5 miles total.

To return to the Loew's the nearest MARTA is Peachtree Center Station. Go 3 stops north to Midtown Station.

Type aficionado and Atlanta lover Sue Youngblood boasts having relatives continuously in Atlanta since before the Civil War, except for a brief period when Sherman was throwing matches. With a background in experiential graphic design and teaching typography classes for almost two decades, Sue shares a wealth of typographic knowledge and Atlanta history.
